How to Port Forward PS Remote and PS Portal

This one is a collective study post. As far as I could find, Sony hasn’t released an official documentation on which ports are needed to use PS Remote and PS Portal. Official support documents and manuals for the PS Portal make no mentions of the matter, let alone for the PS5 console networking features.

I was able to secure one obscure document hinting UDP 8572, but from my quick test, that port alone isn’t enough to connect to the console externally. Different support documents from different regions had completely different range of ports specified, all of which began with ‘if your router doesn’t support UPnP…’, and I think we’ve all seen panic-ridden articles advising against using UPnP.

The one I was able to test that it works were these ports. For both TCP and UDP, port forward 987, 8572, 9295-9308 to your Playstation. I won’t go into details how to do port forwarding, as each router’s firmware differs too greatly —consult your manual.

Two things to consider with what Sony has done here. One, UPnP isn’t going anywhere. If developers and manufacturers aren’t going to maintain their documentations proper, any efforts to replace UPnP are futile. Not to mention, if you happen to own multiple consoles, for example, port forwarding won’t work. Two, IPv6. I’ve written in the past IPv6 will solve this, and it can solve this particular problem. Though, I did glimpse over PS5 firmware’s IPv6 networking issues; let’s open that can of worm after v6 is officially the mainstream.
