New Category, App-to, and SEO

Some of you may have noticed there is a new category called “App-to”. I wanted to use the phrase “there is an app for that”, but that’s trademarked. Instead, I decided to roll with ‘app to [do something]’. I’ve been recommending some apps not for the sake of reviews, but the apps that can do the jobs are just uncommon and weird. Some of them have already gone to mainstream enough to call the post a “review”, while the others were still stuck as “how-to”. This gave me some headache for sometime, because I do need to worry about SEO.

First thing first, I’ve created a category “App-to” to introduce apps, websites, or even a Python module, for all I care, that does at least one job well. It may not be the perfect, and it will likely target niche market. But it’s one of those things that you wonder if there aren’t some brilliant programmers who solved your problem for the price of a cup of coffee. Let’s be honest with ourselves, few bucks we can experiment with, but anything more can be demanding.

Because these are the applications —in the most generic sense— serving niche needs, I won’t be prioritizing how efficient they are compared to the competitors, if any. These posts will focus on bootstrapping, so to speak. Some of the tasks might be too obvious; the ones that can be easily done with few scripts I’ll post it under “How-to”, and ones that have competitors and make strong case for its own, “reviews”.

As for the SEO, search engines are like blackboxes. We know it works, and we have a general idea of how it works. Tagging a post gives it a concrete connection relating to the subject, but too many tags don’t help either —it needs to be concise. I can’t say if this is the optimal way to go, but we will see. Oh, and happy new year.
