Apple Intelligence, PCC, and M4 Macs

Apple Intelligence is in beta still. Some articles I’ve read unfortunately did not understand Apple Intelligence is to be deployed gradually, and while I would argue Apple’s ‘sell now, build later’ tactic to be disingenuous, I would simply disagree current Apple Intelligence is what will be for the remainder of fiscal year. But let us…

How to Fix HomePod Setup Failed (401)

1st gen. HomePod is officially classified a “vintage” by Apple. I, for one, who benignly thought HomePod’s role in HomeKit is also depreciated, had to re-add the HomePod back to the home app. Symptoms When adding a HomePod to existing home in HomeKit, the app would produce “Setup Failed (401)” message after the login and…

Why Apple Vision Pro Launched without Physical Controllers

Ever since the launch of iPhone back in 2007, I’ve seen my fair shares of analysts losing their jobs —or losing their employers’ business prospect— over misconceptions on one thing, and one thing only: physical controllers. Be it may keyboard, stylus, mouse, there were always analyses on new products based on unfounded belief that it…

GM to Replace Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with “Ultifi”

Yes, the air-quote is real. GM is planning to replace Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both smartphone based infotainment systems on cars, with GM’s own flavor of Android Automotive. Tim Babbitt, GM’s head of product for infotainment, says one of the factors behind the decision was safety. Safety is something I see thrown around on…

Apple TV, VPN, and Geoblock Spiel

Anyone who is old enough to live through DVD era of human history and before that Paleolithic VHS period would recall something called region locks. It is an ancient ritualistic practice where contents holders would artificially divide the regions and lock the consumers out from playing them outside of said region. Historians believe the practice…

Running Time Machine Backup Server on macOS

Time Machine backup is a MUST in this time and age, especially after you just paid couple thousands in Mac. Ultimately, no matter how ridiculous issue you just encountered on your machine, if you have a complete backup of the system, there should be no concern. I can’t believe I have to say this in…

How America Grades Samsung on Pass or Fail

Calling out on Galaxy Fold debacle as “graded on a curve” apparently was an understatement. It is time to face the ugly truth. Samsung already has a bad track record, and none of the reviewers had gull to question the product in their hand. These pre-launch reviews that had been published prior to the issue…

May 18, 2018

Quick Announcements This week’s post is delayed, as late as tomorrow. It will cover how to use eGPUs on internal displays (i.e. on your laptop, or all-in-one desktop). While eGPU on internal display is natively supported by Apple, each App has to opt-in in utilize it. This means most of the applications that are already released to the public are unlikely to adopt eGPU capability. I am yet to find any documentation on lists of apps that support eGPU. It appears there is only limited number of application which added support for eGPU, or multiple graphics card, no less.

Beta Software is not a Press Release Copy

In light of possible obsolesce of eGPU support on TB1/2 machines, I thought it would be a good time to go back to the basics for this week. Public and/or developer beta is hardly a reliable source of information. Features will be added, dropped, and then added again in betas. And if you need an…

Downgrade APFS to HFS+

APFS is a newly introduced file system focused primarily on SSD. Due to its technical nature, which I will describe at the end of this post, it can worsen the performance on HDD. If you happen to have a drive running APFS, you will not see an option in Disk Utility to downgrade back. It…

FBI is Still Nagging Apple for Backdoor Access

Apparently books on iPhone back doors from 2015 is not officially closed for FBI. FBI Director shared the actual stats behind the requests last Sunday, around 6,900 devices. Following the Texas shooting, FBI once again shared its frustration that the bureau was unable to decrypt the shooter’s phone. Although the law enforcement did not disclose…

An Argument For Wireless Audio in iPhone 7

Newest turmoil around iPhone is now the lack of 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple, at least Phil Schiller believes it is “courage” to remove headphone jack to move toward wireless future. Several arguments had been made against it, and here are some of them that hold up to criticism.

Mac Can’t Boot With External HDD Attached

It’s sort of official. I just got off from a phone call with Apple Support, and apparently the solution to “can’t boot with external HDD attached” is, removing the HDDs during the startup. Are we talking about PCs from 90s? Here’s the list of symptoms for those who want to go through them: Mac will…

9 out of 10 million iPhones are affected, Apple says

This is actually getting funny. Apparently Apple only had received 9 complaints so far as to the bending issue of new iPhone 6+. And unlike what the internet has suspected, iPhone 6 is durable enough to withstand the “bending.” Here’s my question though: If there’s people who can put a bigger phone in their front pocket, how big is their pants supposed to be? The claim was iPhone 6+ bent in the front pocket from everyday usage. I couldn’t get my Galaxy Note 3 in my front pocket, EVER. Most of the people whom I’ve known had their tablets in their…
